Change Plumbing Fixtures to Improve Energy Efficiency
March 5, 2019Conserving hot water is a great way to bring your utility bills down. Wasteful fixtures use more hot water which means that your water heater has to work harder to keep up. With our help though you can cut down on your hot water usage and save money on your energy costs. Saving water at the same time doesn’t hurt either.
Install Low Flow Aerators on your Faucets
Low flow aerators are inexpensive and could save you 50% of the water your use at the tap. A new low flow aerator uses about 1 gallon per minute compared to standard faucet aerators that use 2.2 gallons per minute. This quick change can save you anywhere from 2 to 16 gallons of water per day.
Install Low Flow Shower Heads
Low flow shower heads have a bad reputation. They’ve been the butt of the joke in sitcoms for years and they’re known for letting out a weak flow compared to full power shower heads. Modern shower heads use as little as 2.5 gallons per minute at 80 psi which means that your shower head will still have plenty of power. Switching to a low flow showerhead can also save 25%-60% on your water usage which will save you money on your water bills as well.
Insulate your Pipes to Reduce Heat Loss
Your water can lose a lot of heat as it travels through your pipes meaning that you’ll have to crank the thermostat on your water heater up to compensate and waste more energy. You can buy inexpensive pipe insulation at any hardware store and minimize the amount of heat you’re losing. This is a great first step if you are starting to try to make your house more efficient because it’s easy to do and can go a long way to saving you money.
Invest in a Water Heater Blanket
If you have a tank style water heater buying a water heater blanket can save you a lot on wasted energy from reheating water. Anywhere you can reduce heat loss from your water is a great place to focus your sights because most insulation repairs are inexpensive, easy to do, and can have a major impact on your utility bills.
