1. Keep those showers short. Sure, a long, hot shower is relaxing, but you know what’s more relaxing? Seeing a nice low water bill. Remember, time is money, especially if that time is spent in the shower.

2. Install water efficient fixtures, like a low-flow showerhead and aerated faucets. You can also reduce the amount of water needed to flush your toilet by up to a two-thirds by replacing it with a dual-flush toilet. These use about 1.1 gallons per half flush, and 1.3 gallons for a full flush. Older toilets, by comparison, average between 3 and 5 gallons per flush.

3. Washing your clothes in cold water saves both water and energy, and helps extend the life of your clothing.

4. Insulate your plumbing pipes. Wrapping your pipes with foam insulation will allow water to heat up faster and, in the process, prevent your pipes from cracking and bursting during the winter. This goes for all pipes in your garage, basement, and any other unheated spaces. 

5. Harvest your excess water. Put a large bucket under the shower while it warms up, and use that water to clean your floors, water your plants, and for other household uses.
