January Home Checklist
January 3, 2019The holidays have come and gone, and a new year has just begun. Which mean now’s the time to give your home a little winter time TLC. How and where to begin? The following checklist will help get you pointed in the right direction:
- Test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. With increased candle use and more wood fires it’s crucial to ensure your detectors are ready for signs of trouble.
- Sort and organize cold-weather accessories. Go through your hats, gloves, scarves, thick socks, and any other winter accessories. Donate anything you no longer use, toss anything without a mate, and replenish whatever is needed.
- Protect plumbing pipes. Know where your home’s water shut-off valve is and show your older children where they are and how to shut them off should trouble strike when they’re home alone. Insulate any pipes exposed to the outdoors or those located in unheated areas of your home to keep them from freezing and potentially bursting.
- Prevent ice dams. If you see ice forming around your roof line, break it up to prevent more freezing and potential damage to your gutters and roof. Once the ice melts, it can seep through your roof into your attic or upstairs and cause even more trouble.
- Knock snow from tree branches. It may look pretty, but heavy snow can cause tree limbs to crack and break. The risk can be even greater if you have trees near your home or power lines.
- Clean out kitchen cabinets and pantry. Check expiration dates on food items and toss anything that’s past it’s lifespan…that goes for canned and jarred foods, too. Wipe down shelves and drawers before putting items back. This also is a great time to re-think your kitchen organization and look for ways to maximize space.
- Prepare for upcoming home projects. With spring not as far off as you might think, now’s the perfect time to start lining up and planning for projects you’d like to undertake once the weather warms up.
