Air Conditioning Self-Help Tips
July 29, 2017Here in the Boston area, we ask a lot of our air conditioning systems. Long hours. No sleep. No pay.
So, the least we can do is give them the same comfort and care they give us. Otherwise, sooner or later it’s going to be “bye-bye comfort and care.”
Here are a few things you can do at home to help ensure uninterrupted service.

Just because it’s warmer indoors than you might like doesn’t mean your system has malfunctioned. So, before rushing to judgment, check your thermostat settings to see if someone may have changed them without your knowledge.
- Clean or replace your filter about every two weeks. Once you make a habit of it, you’ll know exactly how often yours needs to be checked. It’s located inside the air handler, typically located in the attic.
- While you’re in the attic checking on your filter, also look out for any signs of condensation or water around the base of your air handler. That could indicate either a refrigerant leak or poor airflow which is causing your evaporator coils to freeze.
- Keep weeds and shrubs away from your outside condensing unit.
- On the other hand, if you’re soon having a new system installed, ask to have placed where it can sit in the shade at least part of the day. The more shade, the less wear and tear it will undergo.
- Check for mold, which can cause serious health problems. Mold detection kits are available in most home centers and hardware stores.
For added peace of mind, be sure to have your AC system professionally cleaned and inspected at least once a year. If it’s been longer than that since your last inspection, contact Pann Home Services today to request service. With regular preventative maintenance, you can look forward to fewer repairs, lower repair bills, added safety, and lower utility bills. That’s a lot of value from one very affordable service.
